During my 13 years as an entrepreneur I have unknowingly sabotaged my success many times. It was like I had a bad association with money and I would always end up throwing my money away. No matter how hard I tried I would always end up broke and miserable.

I ended up overcoming this by become a student of life. I started to observe what I was doing and then I studied other successful people and learned how to overcome my issues gradually.

The only way to overcome bad habits is through awareness. You must become aware of the things that you are doing that are preventing you from succeeding. Once you are aware you can start to make changes.

This blog post is to help you become aware of your weaknesses and bad habits. It is not designed to make you feel bad but to help you discover what you need to fix up to become a better version of you.

Let’s dive in….

You Waste Your Money

People who sabotage themselves often waste their money. They never seem to have enough. When it comes to the end of the month they are always one emergency away from becoming destitute. They do not budget and they do not plan. They are at the mercy of the money gods.

How to improve this:

To improve in this area you need to become aware of your relationship to money. You need to start to meditate and listen to money affirmations to reprogram your subconscious mind. If you have an addiction to spending money, like shopping, you may need to get counselling. Another strategy is developing up a budget so you know how to spend your money.

You Let Your Ego Get In The Way

Often people let their ego get in the way. They refuse help, they refuse to admit there is a problem. They do not take well to people who give them advice and they are closed to future opportunities.

How to fix this:

To fix this you need to humble yourself. You must admit you have a problem and allow yourself to be open to help. The only way to become less egotistical is through humility. Also you need to reach out to people who can help you with whatever you are struggling with.

You Speak Before Listening

Those that sabotage themselves are not good listeners. They do not listen when someone suggests something and they jump in and speak their opinion too quickly. Sometimes it’s because they are physically wired this way.

What to do:

Pause when speaking. Pace yourself. Study material on listening, there are great videos on Youtube about active listening. Also you may need to address your physical health by taking anxiety supplements. What works for me is drinking chamomile tea. This relaxes and calms me and gets me in the right mood.

You Do Not Actively Study/Learn

People who are struggling do not study or learn. They do not look for Youtube videos, podcasts or other educational material to help them grow. They are often stagnant and stuck in rut. They do this because they believe they have nothing to learn.

How to fix this area:

Start to become aware of opportunities to learn in your every day. Become inquisitive. Start to ask questions and question how things work. Find a topic that interests you and study it. Everyone has a topic that they are interested in. So find something and start to study it.

You Get Caught Up In Emotions

Those that sabotage themselves often get caught up in emotions. They get caught up in “he said, she said.” They get overly emotional if they are offended. They have a hard time of remaining impartial, they always have to take sides.

How to improve:

Start to become aware of your emotional nature. Start to observe what you do on a daily basis. Are you having arguments with people or getting into heated debates?

Start to calm your emotions by addressing your physical health. Supplements like magnesium help with your emotions and managing stress. So I suggest you start to take a supplement. Then, you may also need to get some counselling to help you with your relationships.

You Focus On The Negative

Often people who are not successful, focus on the negative. They have a negative perspective to life. These people also are often depressed. They see the as glass as half empty not as half full.

What to do:

Start to observe yourself on a daily basis. Do you have the tendency to think negatively? Whenever you find something negative in life, flip it on it’s head and think of something positive about it. Start to reframe failure and disappointments as opportunities to grow and learn. If you think your issue is more serious and you are actually depressed I would seek medical advice.
